IPv6 At Georgian College
As one of the most technologically advanced post-secondary schools in Ontario, Georgian College has decided to take things one-step further. On June 6th, 2012 we will be introducing IPv6 to our servers.
In short, IPv6 is the next generation Internet protocol, which will eventually replace the current protocol IPv4. There will be significant improvements made with the switch to IPv6, but the biggest improvement will be the change from 32-bit address to 128-bit address. This change has occurred do to the shortage of IP address left with IPv4. IPv6 will offer endless amounts of IP combinations and will virtually never run out, at least not within our lifetime.
However, don't get scared, IPv6 and IPv4 will co-exist on the internet for the next couple of years, as all the bugs have yet to be worked out.
Ultimately, IPv6 is the future of the Internet, the future of Georgian College and the future of world around us.
